National High School
Oratorical Contest
Each year, many high
school students compete for over $138,000 in scholarships. This
program helps students receive a better understanding of the United
States Constitution, and gain a deeper respect and knowledge of
duties as American citizens.
Annually, the Department of Kansas awards $2,400 as follows the winner receives a $1,500 scholarship when he or she represents Kansas in the National Finals contest. The next three places in Kansas receive $500, $250, and $150 in scholarships. Many Posts, County Councils, and Districts also provide scholarships~ The top three contestants in the nation are awarded scholarships totaling $48,000 ($18,000, $16,000, and $14,000). The National Association of Secondary School Principals has placed this program on the NASSP National Advisory List of Contests and Activities.

Music Committee
Scholarship
The name of this
scholarship, to be awarded annually, will be the “American Legion
Music Committee Scholarship.” This $1,000 scholarship is available
to all Kansas high school seniors, college level freshmen or
sophomores who have distinguished themselves in the field of music
and/or who will major or minor in music at an approved Kansas
junior college, college, or university.
Shooting Sports
Scholarship
An
outright grant of $500, applicants for this scholarship must be a
Kansas high school senior or college level freshman, who has
participated in an American Legion Shooting Sports program in the
State and Regional levels. The applicant must be an average or
better student scholastically.
Hobble (LPN) Nursing
Scholarship
This is an outright grant
of $300 (payable one time) at the start of the first semester,
awarded only upon acceptance and verification of enrollment by the
scholarship winner in an accredited Kansas school which awards a
diploma for Licensed Practical Nursing (LPN). The applicant must
have attained the age of 18 prior to taking the Kansas State Board
Examination. The scholarship will be awarded to an individual who
is both qualified and in need of financial aid.
Eagle Scout of the
Year
The American Legion Life
Insurance Trust Fund provides for a $10,000 National Scholarship to
be awarded to the Eagle Scout who is selected “The American Legion
Scout of the Year.” The individual selected will be named by the
National Americanism Commission during the annual National Spring
Meetings. Three runner-up scholarships, at $2,500 each have been
added to the scholarship awards. The Department of Kansas also
gives a $500 scholarship to the Kansas Scout of the Year.

Dr. “Click” Cowger
Baseball Scholarship
This $500 scholarship is
awarded to a Kansan who has participated in American Legion
Baseball. The scholarship is paid directly to the school at the
beginning of the semester in which the recipient
enrolls.
American Legion
Baseball Leadership
This $1,000 scholarship
is awarded per state by National Headquarters to an American Legion
certified baseball player whose name appears on American Legion
Baseball’s Form #1 that has been filed with National
Headquarters.
Paul Flaherty Athletic
Scholarship
This $250 scholarship is
awarded to a high school boy or girl who has participated in school
athletics. $125.00 to be paid at the start of each semester (One
Year Only).
The following scholarships are available to high school seniors, college level freshmen or sophomores who are in need of educational assistance, and are enrolled or intend to enroll in an approved junior college, college, university, or trade school located in the state of Kansas. The applicant must be the son or daughter ofa veteran; the parent(s) must have been a member of the Kansas American Legion and/or Legion Auxiliary for the past three years. The sons or daughters of deceased members in either organization are also eligible if the parent’s dues were paid up at the time of death. The applicant must be an average or better student scholastically, and must show a high school transcript with grade point average.

Scholarship Fund
This is an outright grant
of $500 to be paid at the start of Fall semester (One Year
Only).
Ted and Nora Anderson
Scholarships
Four $500 scholarships,
$250.00 at the start of each semester (One Year Only).
Albert M. Lappin
Scholarship
An
outright grant of $1,000. $500.00 to be paid at the start of each
semester in any one school year.
Rosedale Post 346
Scholarships
Two scholarships of
$1,500 each, $750.00 each at the start of each semester in any one
school year.
Charles W. &
Annette Hill Scholarship
An
outright grant of $1,000. $500.00 to be paid at the beginning of
each semester in any one school year. The applicant must have at
least a 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scholarship system. Consideration should
be given to those applicants desiring to engage in the field of
Science, Engineering, or Business Administration. The applicant
must be a descendent of a member of The American Legion and/or
Auxiliary.
U.S. “Udie” Grant
Scholarship
One $500 scholarship,
$250 at the start of each semester in any one school year. The
applicant must be a son, daughter, grandson, or granddaughter of a
member of the Kansas Sons of the American Legion or a member of the
Kansas Sons of the American Legion for the past three consecutive
years.

educational information, to schools and libraries for the benefit
of assisting any student who needs help furthering their education.
The book is updated annually and contains hundreds of scholarships,
grants, and occupational opportunities available to high school
seniors and college level freshmen or sophomores. For further
