Sublette High School is extending a special congratulations to Eric Bustillos and Megan Reiss, who were recently named School Winners for the prestigious Wendy’s High School Heisman Award. To be eligible for this award, students must exhibit excellence in academics, athletics, and community/school leadership.

The Wendy’s High School Heisman program, awarded in conjunction with the collegiate Heisman, celebrates the achievements of the nation’s top high school seniors both in and out of the classroom. Just as the collegiate Heisman is known for being the top award in college football, the Wendy’s High School Heisman award is known for being the most prestigious award at the high school level. The award encourages future leadership by recognizing well-balanced lifestyles at an early age.

Megan Reiss and Eric Bustillos were selected as School Winners based on the following accomplishments:

Megan participates in Volleyball, Basketball, and Track and Field. She is involved in National Honor Society, Kansas Association for Youth, and S-Club. Megan is the daughter of Jacqueline Daldegan and Alan Reiss.

Eric participates in Cross Country and Basketball. He is a member of National Honor Society, American Field Services, Kansas Association for Youth, Hispanic and Latino Organization, S-Club, and Student Council. Bustillos is also the Senior and Student Council Representative for American Field Service. Eric is the son of Jose and Lupe Bustillos.

“Megan and Eric are an inspiration to those around them and will represent their school well in the next stage of Wendy’s High School Heisman award judging,” said Archie Griffin, the only two-time winner of the prestigious Heisman Memorial Trophy and Wendy’s High School Heisman program spokesperson. “I’m proud to be a part of a program that honors young men and women who embody the spirit of Heisman tradition of hard work, dedication and an outstanding record both on and off the field.”

The school winners were selected from a group of 12 school applicants from Sublette High School. Applicants include: Katie Hessman, Megan Orth, Hayes Kelman, Beau Jury, Mason Hibbard, Rachel Walter, Albert Withers, Danny Gonzalez, Brandon Stokes, and Gus Gesling.

Sublette at Satanta in Middle School basketball action

On Monday, November 23, the Satanta Indians Middle School basketball teams hosted Sublette. With only two 7th grade players for the Satanta girls, the two schools each combined their 7th and 8th graders into a team and fought it out against each other in the old gym. Meanwhile, the 7thgrade boys went at it in the new gym. For the girls, Satanta, after leading 15-6 at half time, poured it on strong in the second half, winning 33-9. For the 7th grade boys, the first half was a runaway for Sublette, 27-10. In the second half, the Indians doubled their output of the first half, but it wasn’t enough to close the gap, the Larkmen winning the game convincingly, 42-30.

The 8th grade boys game turned out to be a close one, though.

Sublette got on the scoreboard first, followed by a field goal from Garrett Miller to tie it up. But that would be Satanta’s only scoring in the first quarter, as Octavio Arredondo, Brendan Giesick, Caleb Clancy, and Travis Webb each scored 2-points, making it 10-2 Sublette at the end of the first quarter.

After another 2 by Arredondo, Wiley Stanfill put one in for Satanta, making the score 12-4. Clancy then went on to make the next two field goals, increasing Sublette’s lead 14-4.

After Satanta missed a 2 and a 3 point attempt, Sublette scored again, making it 18-4.

Stanfill then made one for the Indians on an inbounds play, making the score 18-6.

A foul by Sublette’s Trevor Leverett then sent Stanfill to the line for two freethrow attempts, but he missed both of them. Satanta got the ball and Miller was able to put in a jump shot, making it 18-8.

Sublette then added to their score with a jump shot by Travis Webb, followed by a quick two-pointer by Satanta’s Brendon Maturey, making the score 20-10. Sublette was then able to boost their lead going into half time as Clancey put in a 3-pointer as time was running out. The half ended 23-10 Sublette.

The first score of the 2nd half came 1:45 into the third quarter with Miller putting one in for Satanta. On Satanta’s next possession Miller was fouled while shooting so went to the line for 2 freethrows. Miller missed on both attempts. Sublette then went on to score the next two baskets followed by a three-pointer by Trevor Leverett, boosting them to a 30-12 lead.

Stanfill then made two more for Satanta, making the score 30-16. And two freethrows by Maturey gave the Indians another 2 points. However, Leverett for Sublette put in another 3-pointer, and their lead was 33-18. Satanta, called for traveling, then stole the ball back, but they were unable to get a shot in. Abram Peters then put one in for Sublette, and the score was 35-18.

Leverett then put in another three point shot, giving the Larkmen a 20-point lead, 38-18.

Maturey then is fouled and makes one of his freethrows, then is fouled again, and makes one, making the score 38-20. After another basket by Sublette, and two by Satanta, Sublette called a time out, with 3:43 remaining in the game, the score, 40-24.

After the time out, Miller was able to put some more points on the board for Satanta, making a layup and then making both foul shots after being fouled on the Indian’s next possession. Sublette’s lead was now down to 12 points, 40-28.

With 3 minutes remaining, Michael Ochoa was able to steal the ball and put one in for Satanta making the score 40-30. Then after Miller is fouled by Travis Webb, Miller puts one in, and it’s 40-31. A steal by Maturey results in two more points, cutting Sublette’s lead down to 7 points.

With 1:41 remaining in the game, Stanfill went to the line for the Indians and made both his freethrows, the score, 40-35. Two points by Clancy then helped Sublette keep their lead, but a field goal by Maturey kept it a 5-point game, 42-37, with 19.8 seconds remaining in the game.

A foul on Clancy sent him to the line for Sublette, and he made one of his two shots. Satanta then hurried down the court and put one in, making it a 4-point game, 43-39.

The clock then ticked down to 2.7 seconds left in the game without another score. A foul on Trevor Leverett sent him to the foul line where he made the final two points of the game. The final score, Sublette 45, Satanta 39, a hard-fought game to the end for both teams.

Fans for both teams look forward to another exciting night of basketball next Thursday, when Satanta takes on Southwestern Heights at home and Sublette heads to Holcomb.
