The students of USD #374 have hit the ground running, in and out of the classroom! Interests are being tapped, talents are being utilized, and academic growth is being experienced on a daily basis. One of the commitments we have for this website is to provide students, families, friends, and the community -moments caught in time through pictures. This article will be standing; that is, it will be in this section continuously - but the pictures attached will change weekly. When you click on the picture another page will open where you can choose to see the pictures as a slide show or look at them one at a time. As the pictures are rotated off they will still be available to you through the link under the District area on the left of the screen. If you have any questions, please contact us at mlower@usd374.org. If you have any pictures you would like to share – or if you have a story you would like to write, or any suggestions or comments, please let us know - this site is for you!!!
Sublette attends
2009 KAY Regional Conference
KAY Club attended the Area 5 KAY Regional Conference on November 4, 2009 at South Gray.
The Club received the Gold Award, recognizing their student leadership and service to their school, community, nation and world for the 2008-2009 school year.
The Kansas Association for Youth (KAY) is a character building, leadership-training program directed by the Kansas State High School Activities Association. This nationally acclaimed organization provides students an opportunity to learn to assume their citizen ship responsibilities and to enrich their personalities through well organized programs. These programs emphasize four areas of service: school, community, nation and world.
The theme for the 2009 Regional Conference was “Hooked on Leadership!” This conference affords opportunities for student leaders and sponsors from neighboring clubs to share successes and challenges, as well as exchange ideas. Sessions in leadership training and organizational skills re also offered. These conferences inspire delegates to return to their clubs to challenge their local members. Local KAY members attended the Regional Conference were: Brennen Menzie, Emily Carminati, Michala Elliot, Haley Miller, Lynn Rojas, Rachel Montoya, Bianca Perez, and Adreyana Kraber. Accompanying the group was Kit Griffin, the club’s sponsor.

Liberal’s annual International Fair is a place where people from all around the world can exhibit their culture, food, dress, and customs. Saturday, November 7, the Sublette AFS club participated in the International Fair. Members of AFS and the foreign exchange students staying in Sublette, Satanta, and Wichita put together an international booth to show off their countries. Countries ranging from Taiwan to Bolivia were represented by the exchange students. Each one either made food, a poster board presentation, or both to illustrate his or her country.
Maud Bailly, France, created a delicious French dessert for the fair visitors to try. The dessert consisted of a variety of fruits in custard.
Sarah Michalowski, Germany, baked German sunflower seed bread and made a tomato dip for the bread.
Martin Lopez, Bolivia, made macaroons and cheese bread from Bolivia. He also put together a poster board presentation on Bolivia.
Stefano Casalini, Italy, brought Italian music and biscotti for visitors to enjoy. He also had a presentation on Italy.
Hayri Gecim, Turkey, cooked a sweet Turkish dessert and made a poster board with facts on Turkey. He also brought Turkish music and played it over the loud speakers so every visitor could enjoy the music.
Tan Treetrong, Taiwan, had a special service. He wrote visitor’s names in Taiwanese. The fair visitors were astounded at how different the two languages looked.
Mari Flaataamo, Norway, brought Norwegian cheese. AFS’s neighboring booth owner said the cheese was extremely different from American cheese, but it was good!
Alex Johansen, Netherlands, made meatballs and porridge. Carol Ann Zimmerman, AFS sponsor, said the porridge didn’t taste like American porridge. She said it was a little like oatmeal.
Not only did AFS members present their countries, but they also experienced other countries. They tasted India, created Mexican crafts, watched Chineese and Mayan dances, and more. “I liked making the Mexican crafts,” said Michalowski and Emily Aragon. Every AFS member agreed that they enjoyed looking at all of the different booths. “It was cool to see all the other booths, and I met a girl from Turkey! I didn’t think that was possible!” said Gecim.
The International Fair also had several performances throughout the day, which AFS took part in. While Gecim played his Turkish music over the loud speakers, he also taught girls a Turkish dance. Bailly commented, “The dance was kind of difficult, but I enjoyed it a lot.” Gecim also sang a Turkish song with Lopez accompanying on guitar. Casalini had a one-man act of playing guitar and singing an Italian song. “He did an amazing job, and his voice is gorgeous!” stated Molly Walter. During both Gecim’s and Casalini’s song, the rest of the AFS members sat behind them for moral support.
Zimmerman said, “The International Fair sponsors enjoyed the AFS students greatly. The AFS students were a lot of fun to have at the fair this year!”
