Sublette hosts Satanta in Middle School football action

By Rolf Yungclas
Monitor-Chief

After a spate of cold, wet weather earlier in the week, it was warm and sunny Thursday evening for the Sublette Larks Middle School football team when they hosted the Satanta Indians. Sublette got on the scoreboard first with a run by Octavio Arredondo. The point after was good, giving Sublette a 7-0 lead.

Satanta got the ball, but would not get far, and gave up the ball to Sublette on downs. Sublette then moved the ball down to the Satanta 27 yard-line, but would also give up the ball on downs. So taking over the ball Satanta gained a first down on a pass play. Another 1st down on the next play with a run by Brendon Maturey with time running out in the 1st quarter, took the Indians up to the Sublette 45. A run by Garrett Miller then gave them their third first down in a row.

Continuing to work the ball upfield, the Indians then faced 1st and goal from the 7. A toss by Garrett Miller was complete to Guadalupe Alvarado, but a tackle by Chris Ornelas kept the Indians out of the end zone, 2nd and goal on the 5. An incomplete pass made it 3rd and goal on the 5. Being stopped from scoring again, it was 4th down. Trying to run the ball in for the score, Satanta fumbled the ball on the next play. They recovered their own fumble, but Sublette took over on downs at their own 3-yard line.

A penalty by the Larkmen backed them up to the 2-yard line. But they would get out of the hole they were in, and with 3 ½ minutes left in the half, Sublette was on their 45 yard-line. Penalized again, Sublette faced a 2nd and 15 from the 40- yard line. A tackle by Tristan Colantonio on the next play made it 3rd and 15 for the Larkmen. Sublette would then gain another 1st down right before the clock ran out at halftime, the score remaining Sublette 7, Satanta 0.

To start the 2nd half, Sublette kicked off to Satanta. Soon finding themselves in a 3rd and 7 situation, Satanta’s Miller gave the ball to Guadalupe Alvarado, who ran it for a 1st down, ball on the Sublette 47.

A pass completion in the ensuing play got the Indians to the 31-yard line. But the Indians were stopped and Sublette took over on downs on their 28-yard line.

After the two teams exchanged possessions, Sublette had the ball again. Then a pair of consecutive 1st downs got them up to the Satanta 34. A 15 yard run by Wyatt Brown and a pass from Nate Cearley to Caleb Clancy helped get Sublette down to the Satanta 10-yard line, but after a strong defensive stand by Satanta, the Larkmen faced a 4th and 24. An incomplete pass on 4th down and Satanta took over on downs.

After the kickoff Satanta worked their way up to their 43 yard line on runs by Maturey and Alvarado, but a penalty for an illegal block by Satanta moved the ball back to the 33, 1st and 20. Maturey then ran the ball up to the 42, but another Satanta penalty dropped them back to the 23. The Indians would be unable to dig out of the hole they were in and Sublette took over on downs at the Satanta 30. Gains by Sublette, including big runs by Arredondo and Travis Webb made it 2nd and goal from the 6. Arredondo then took it in for the touchdown, and the point after was unsuccessful, making it 13-0 for Sublette.

Miller took the ensuing kickoff for the Indians and made it up to the Satanta 40. After a gain of 3 yards, Maturey then ran the ball up to the Sublette 44, stopped from going all the way for a touchdown by Arrredondo.

With 1:40 remaining in the game, the Indians still had the ball, 1st and 10 on the Sublette 30. On the next play Miller took the snap and handed off to Maturey. Maturey, trying to pass, was under pressure, so he ran with the ball, taking it in for a touchdown. In the Indians attempt at a 2-point conversion, the whole team pushed their man across the goal line, but, as described by the announcer, was penalized for “illegal helping.” After the penalty was assessed, they retried the 2-point attempt from the 10, but were stopped short. Score: Sublette 13, Satanta 6.

Satanta then tried an onside kick, but Sublette recovered the ball at midfield with 56 seconds remaining. A big run by Arredondo looked like it might turn into a touchdown, but he was stopped by Humberto Castilleja on the Satanta 35. After Satanta took their final time out, the Larks made a short gain on the next play, then let the clock run out. Final score, the Larkmen beat the Indians 13-6.
