The students of USD #374 have hit the ground running, in and out of the classroom! Interests are being tapped, talents are being utilized, and academic growth is being experienced on a daily basis. One of the commitments we have for this website is to provide students, families, friends, and the community -moments caught in time through pictures. This article will be standing; that is, it will be in this section continuously - but the pictures attached will change weekly. When you click on the picture another page will open where you can choose to see the pictures as a slide show or look at them one at a time. As the pictures are rotated off they will still be available to you through the link under the District area on the left of the screen. Sublette takes on Lakin Friday, Sept. 25
Rolf Yungclas ~ Monitor-Chief,
September 30th edition
On September 25, the Sublette Larkmen hosted the Lakin Broncs in varsity football. Sublette received the opening kickoff but had to punt to Lakin. The Larkmen had great field position after the punt, downing the ball on the Lakin 5-yard line.
The Broncs would be forced to punt, and with a Sublette penalty, the Larkmen would start from the 38-yard line. After another punt by Sublette, Lakin would start on their 40 yard line. Unable to make any progress due to a missed 40-yard pass play and 20 yard run called back due to penalty, Lakin would attempt another pass, only to be intercepted by Brandon Stokes.
Sublette was then able to move the ball down to the 5-yard line. But a holding penalty sent them back to the 15, and another penalty for holding made it 1st and goal from the 28. An incomplete pass made it 2nd and goal. Lakin intercepted the ball on the next play and ran it back to their 13. But Sublette recovered a fumble at the end of the play, and then worked it down to the 4-yard line, where Danny Gonzalez ran it in for a touchdown, making it Sublette 6, Lakin 0. The kick for the point after hit the crossbar on the goalpost and bounced back onto the field. There was no further scoring in the first half.
In the second half a Lakin punt was blocked by Spur Robinett, giving the Larks the ball on the Lakin 44. Sublette worked their way down to the Lakin 7-yard line. But the Larkmen were unable to get it into the end zone on 4th down, so Lakin took over on the Sublette 3-yard line. After gaining some yardage, Lakin was forced to punt. Sublette was penalized for roughing the kicker, so it gave Lakin another chance with 4th and 5. Unable to make a first down the next play, Sublette took over on downs.
Sublette was unable to make a score their next possession, and had to punt. The punt down to the Lakin 6-yard line gave the Larkmen very good field position again. But Lakin would be forced to punt again. Sublette’s runback to the Lakin 25 would not be able to be turned into a touchdown before the half ended, with Sublette leading 6-0.
Sublette kicked off to Lakin to begin the second half. The Lakin drive was stopped when the Larkmen recovered a fumble on their own 29. After getting a first down, a Lakin penalty made it 1st and 5. Sublette would get a first down the next play. After getting to the 33 yard line, the Larkmen would lose the ball on downs, and after getting it down to the 1-yard line, Lakin would run it in for a touchdown. The kick would make the score Lakin 7, Sublette 6 with 47 seconds remaining in the 3rd quarter.
In the 4th quarter an interception by Lakin put them on the Sublette 37 with 6:49 remaining in the game. The would then work their way down to the Sublette 1-yard line. After an offside penalty, Lakin scored on a 6-yard pass play. The point after made the score 14-6, Lakin leading.
Sublette returned the kickoff to the 31 yard line. Then on 4th and less than a yard, Sublette got the first down. But they would only get up to their 43- yard line before being penalized and pushed back to their own 1-yard line, due in part to an offensive face mask penalty on 3rd down, and a quarterback sack on the next play.
Lakin took over on the Sublette 1-yard line and then, after being dropped for a loss on the next play, would take it in for a touchdown. The point after made it 21-6 Lakin with 59 seconds left in the game.
A kickoff return got the Larkmen up to the 36, but as time was running out Sublette found themselves with a 4th down and a half field to score. The final play as time was running out, a pass to Williams was completed, but he was unable to advance the ball from there. Final score, 21-6 Lakin.
Royce Williams led the Larks in yards rushing with 14 carries for 63 yards. Mason Hibbard followed with 13 carries for 52 yard, followed by Danny Gonzalez with 10 carries for 35 yards. Quarterback Brandon Stokes was 6 of 18 passing for 68 yards and had 2 interceptions.
In pass receiving, Angel Martinez led in receiving yardage with 39 yards, Preston Sabata 11 yards, Williams 6 yards, and Hibbard 6 yards.
In total yardage, Sublette had 150 yards rushing and 68 yards passing. Lakin finished with 201 yards rushing and 54 yards passing.
